So you wanna be a roller derby skater?

Roller Derby is more than just a sport, its about being part of a community. League skaters are required to volunteer their time to help out in areas such as fundraising, promotion, coaching, league administration and various other tasks. As well as committing to attending training, you will be required to help out off the track too.

Roller Derby is a full contact, physical sport played on quad roller skates. Skaters are required to wear suitable knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a helmet and a mouthguard. There is a limited amount of spare equipment available, but nothing is better than your own, well maintained kit. Please consult your doctor if you have concerns about whether Roller Derby is right for you.

All skaters are expected to undergo rigorous physical training to prepare for game play. This includes drills to learn falling, blocking (hitting), and exercising to attain the level of fitness required to play. You will be given instruction on how to skate, and to participate in drills safely, but you will also be expected to work on your skills and fitness independently.

League skaters are required to pay dues, which cover the cost of hiring our training space, and the occassional social event / team meeting. Dues are payable monthly. Skaters and officials also must take out insurance cover with Skate Australia, and sign waivers that indemnify GRDL.

Fresh Meat skaters can expect to be treated with care and respect, and coached separately from the main league session until they are deemed able to participate without posing a risk to themselves or other skaters. Coaches’ decisions on this are final, and these rules are in place for your safety.

League skaters are required to complete skills tests at various stages of their progression in the league from Fresh Meat to Bouting Skater.

GRDL Refs are required to attend training regularly, and participate in skate drills and exercise. Reffing requires a considerable level of fitness, skate skill and an in depth knowledge of the rules of roller derby. Refs are also required to wear safety equipment.

  • Hi there,
I am really intersested in getting into roller derby. Just wondering when your next freshmeat intake might be? Also- the 21st of march- how do i get more info on attending a bout or session?
Do you need to live in geelong?, because i live in werribee. Could someone get back to me
    Thankyou.

    • Hey Belinda,

You don’t need to live in Geelong, we have girls that travel from all around the Bellarine and Surf Coast Peninsula (even some from Melbourne).

We haven’t set the next date for fresh meat intake but if you email freshmeat@geelongrollerderby.com we can let you know when we set it. Were just skills testing our current freshies.

We can’t invite you along to a session as our trainings are closed doors but if you want to come to the bout its 2pm this Sunday and tickets are available on the door on through the website, on the front page.

      Cheers

  • hey,

I’m from warrnambool and want to get into roller derby. I have been told that this is not possible if you don’t live closer to metro regions. Is it possible to start your own team and compete in the geelong bouts??

    Cheers.

    hey,

I want to start a roller derby team/league in warrnambool that might compete against geelong. Is this possible and if so how would i go about it??

    • Hey Kylie,

      The more leagues the merrier!

It is a lot of hard work and takes about a year before skaters are at a bouting standard.

The first step is always to see if people in your area are interested and to find somewhere to skate.

      Cheers
